Ghost Mask
Masks have fascinated me for as long as I can remember.
During my childhood in Tirol, I didn’t dare leave the house at the beginning of December because the Krampus creatures with their carved faces roamed the village.
I couldn’t stop drawing them in my school notebooks, probably as a way of coping with my fear. On special occasions, there are a whole host of exciting, friendlier characters in the region, each with their own masks, costumes, and dances.
In December 2025, my perception of masks changed when I saw in Mexico how much freedom and surrealism the traditional designs there express. I suddenly realized that the masks I had been drawing in my sketchbooks for 15 years finally had to leave the paper. Here is my first attempt. I will be working with this medium a lot more and look forward to sharing the process!
